For over a century, a Fellowship with the Commercial Education Society of Australia (FCES) has stood as an elite benchmark of prestige, uniting an influential network of visionaries who have shaped the landscape of global commerce and higher education. The FCES post-nominal connects high-profile tertiary leaders, including University Deans and Vice-Chancellors, alongside esteemed legal academics, politicians, and pioneering corporate executives. Yet, equally woven into this century-old lineage are the quiet, humble professionals who have worked tirelessly away in the background to make a genuine difference in the industry.

What truly unites every single Fellow, from global commentators to dedicated local educators, is that they have profoundly distinguished themselves by going well above and beyond what is required. They are individuals who consistently choose to go the extra mile, often for no financial, political, or personal gain, driven purely by a shared commitment to excellence, mentorship, and advancing the future of commercial education.

FCES is not confined to one profession, sector or type of educator. Potential Fellows may include:

• Tertiary Education Leaders and Educators, including those working in Higher Education, Vocational Education and ELICOS
• Commerce, Business Studies and Economics Teachers
• Business leaders, executives, directors and entrepreneurs
• Professionals in commerce, accounting, finance, law, management and related fields
• Researchers, scholars, authors and educational publishers
• Leaders in independent, international and professional education
• Public, policy and community leaders whose work contributes to education or commercial life
• Mentors and experienced professionals who have helped others develop and succeed
• Emerging professionals who have already demonstrated unusual initiative, service or impact

Holding a particular title does not automatically make someone a Fellow. What matters is whether a person has distinguished themselves through contribution, leadership, service, mentorship or professional impact, and has consistently been willing to do more than is simply expected of them.

Commercial education is a field of study and professional practice that prepares people for careers in business, trade and commerce by combining practical skills with an understanding of business principles.

Today, it encompasses areas such as accounting, marketing, economics, business law, finance, management, entrepreneurship and technology, while developing practical capabilities such as communication, problem-solving, employability, leadership and professional judgement.

At CESA, we take a broad and contemporary view of commercial education. In a very real sense, commercial education underpins every profession. Whether someone works in education, law, health, technology, the arts, government or another field, they increasingly encounter questions of management, finance, communication, enterprise, employment and organisational life.

Commercial education has evolved considerably since the Society was founded in 1910, and CESA has evolved with it. Today, commercial education exists wherever education, employment, enterprise and professional practice meet.

As professions, workplaces and industries continue to change, so too will commercial education. The Fellowship is therefore broad enough to recognise those who have contributed to its development, those advancing it today, and those helping to shape what commercial education becomes next.

The Society's governing Articles provide a simple foundation for Fellowship:

“The membership degree of Fellow is available to persons whose qualifications, experience, or contribution to education and to commercial education in particular, in the opinion of the Council merit such recognition.”

Today, we interpret that standard in the spirit in which Fellowship has always been intended: recognition of people who have genuinely distinguished themselves and contributed beyond what would ordinarily be expected of them.

There is no single career path to FCES. A Fellow may have distinguished themselves through education, leadership, scholarship, business, governance, mentoring, professional service, innovation, community contribution or sustained support of the Society and its objectives.

Fellowship is not determined by age, job title or length of service alone. It is about contribution, character and impact.

Across generations, Fellows have supported one another. Those with decades of experience have often mentored, encouraged and opened doors for people beginning their careers. Younger Fellows have, in turn, helped experienced colleagues adapt to change, remain connected and transition into later stages of their professional lives. This exchange of knowledge, encouragement and support is an important part of the Fellowship.

At its heart, the Fellowship is a fraternity of like-minded professionals who believe in doing more than is expected of them.

Fellows choose to encourage one another, remain optimistic about what others can achieve, reject the gatekeeper mindset, and help each other along the professional journey.

We believe professional life is better when people open doors rather than close them.

Fellowship is therefore more than a post-nominal or recognition of past achievement. It is an active community built around collegiality, generosity, encouragement and a genuine willingness to help others succeed.

This is achieved through:

• scholarship and contribution to the Journal of Commercial Education
• professional mentoring
• networking and introductions
• occasional social gatherings
• sharing employment and professional opportunities
• supporting colleagues at different stages of their careers.

Sometimes this may involve formal mentoring. At other times, it may simply mean making a phone call, introducing two people who should know one another, sharing an opportunity or offering encouragement at the right moment.

Above all, we believe that making the effort to get to know and support one another far outweighs any qualification a person may hold or any number of papers they may have written. Qualifications, scholarship and professional achievement matter, but Fellowship is ultimately about the kind of colleague a person chooses to be and the contribution they make to the people and profession around them.

There are three pathways to becoming a Fellow of the Commercial Education Society of Australia (FCES).

The Society may invite an individual whose qualifications, experience, professional contribution or standing suggest that they merit consideration for Fellowship.

Where an invitation is accepted, the prospective Fellow completes the online Fellowship form below.

An individual may be nominated for Fellowship by someone who believes their contribution deserves recognition.

The nominee must first agree to proceed. Once they have done so, they complete the same online Fellowship form below.

Expressions of Interest are welcome.

You do not need to wait to be invited or nominated. Individuals who believe their qualifications, experience or contribution may meet the standard expected of an FCES are welcome to put themselves forward through the online form below.

Whichever pathway brings you to us, every prospective Fellow completes the same online Fellowship form.

The form gives each candidate an opportunity to tell us about their professional journey, contribution, impact and the ways in which they have gone beyond what would ordinarily be expected.

An invitation or nomination does not automatically confer Fellowship. Applications are considered by the President of the Commercial Education Society of Australia and/or on the advice of his/her Council.

Not everyone who expresses an interest will necessarily be ready for Fellowship immediately, and that does not need to be the end of the conversation.

Those who submit an Expression of Interest but do not yet meet the requirements of Fellowship may be invited to become an Ordinary Member of the Commercial Education Society of Australia (MCES).

Ordinary Membership may serve as a transitional grade towards Fellowship, supported by an agreed plan of professional development, contribution and/or experience designed to help the member progress towards the standard expected of an FCES.

Once that agreed pathway has been completed, the member may be invited to apply for Fellowship. A $50 AUD application fee applies for the duration of this transitional membership process.

Fellows are entitled to describe themselves as Fellows of the Commercial Education Society of Australia and to use the distinguishing post-nominal FCES, subject to the Society's governing requirements.

The FCES designation also has longstanding documented recognition. Who's Who in Australia records FCES as “Fellow Commercial Education Society of Australia”, alongside a wide range of Australian and international professional Fellowship designations.

Fellows receive:

• the right to use the FCES post-nominal
• a formal Certificate of Fellowship bearing the Society's Seal
• a Letter of Welcome signed by the President
• connection with the wider Fellowship network and the activities of the Society.

The post-nominal may be used professionally, including on CVs, LinkedIn, biographies, email signatures, business cards and other appropriate professional material.

An initial application fee of $100 AUD applies to prospective Fellows.

For Fellows in Australia and neighbouring Pacific nations, a formal hard-copy Fellowship Certificate bearing the Society's Seal is prepared and sent without any additional postage or administration charge.

For Fellows residing in other overseas nations, a digital Fellowship Certificate is provided free of charge. A hard-copy certificate is also available for an additional $50 AUD postage and administration fee to cover the costs associated with preparing and sending the Fellowship Certificate internationally.

Fellowship is intended to represent an ongoing connection with the Society and with fellow FCES members, rather than simply a one-off award. Fellows are warmly invited to continue their support through an annual contribution of $100 AUD.

These contributions support the ongoing work of the Commercial Education Society of Australia, including its publications, Fellowship activities, professional initiatives and the wider network of Fellows.
